Carbon's Golden Malted History
Late 1930’s
In the early days, out of the small office located on Days Avenue, in Buchanan, Michigan these ladies would make 100 cases per day. Fred S. Carbon would personally deliver his product to his customers in this van. Today the company produces over 1600 cases per day and still provides the same direct store delivery quality service.
World’s First Improved Flour-Golden Malted Pancake Flour
Fred S. Carbon founder of FS. Carbon Company in Buchanan, MI! begins making the World’s First Improved Flour-Golden Malted Pancake Flour. This was the first flour blended with other products such as Malt, Sugar, Flavorings, etc. and thus was awarded a patent on the process.
Fred S. Carbon was an electrical engineer with a degree from the University of Naples, in Italy.
1939 – 1945 | World War II
During the war sugar was rationed, but Carbon’’s as a business was allotted more sugar than the average person to produce syrups and syrup bases. A&W Root Beer had Fred make the syrup that they used to produce their soda.
Don Carbon Graduation
Don Carbon graduates from Ferris State University with a 2 year Business degree and 2 year Chemistry degree.
Early 1960’s | Elias Brothers Restaurant chain
FS. Carbon Company is contracted by Elias Brothers Restaurant chain to make “pie shell” flour for their homemade pies. This is how Carbon’s was first introduced to the Elias Brothers chain, an account the company still proudly serves today.
Introducing of Belgian Waffles
New York’s World Fair: Belgian Waffles are introduced to the world. Maurice Vermersch ts the person credited with introducing the Belgian Waffle at the Fair.
Awarded Patent on Rugged 1 Waffle Iron
FS. Carbon was awarded Patent on Rugged 1 waffle iron.
(US Patent # 3,377,942).
Early 1970’s | loan waffle irons to commercial accounts
Don Carbon decides to loan waffle irons to commercial accounts at no cost providing that they use Carbon’s flour only. This innovative marketing strategy is what drove the Belgian Waffle Market to its popularity today.
Don Carbon takes more prominent role in the business & is instrumental in developing the distribution network, which has become the lifeline of the company today.
Don Carbon, while operating a syrup production facility and flour distribution facility in Florida, was asked by Walt Disney World to make the syrup for their “Real Orange Drink™. They were getting ready to open the new Disney World in Orlando, Fl. This was Carbon’s first opportunity to work with Walt Disney World. Today, Carbon’s is the proud supplier of waffles and waffle cones to Walt Disney World.
Fist Lady Elizabeth “Betty” Ford & White House
Fist Lady Elizabeth “Betty” Ford required that Carbon’s Waffles be served in the White House and insisted that whatever events she spoke at, they would have Carbon’s waffles for her. Carbon’s used to deliver to her directly in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Fred S. Carbon passing away
Fred S. Carbon passes away at age of 86. Don Carbon becomes president of company.
Early 1990’s – Days Avenue office
FS. Carbon Company moves from this Days Avenue office in Buchanan to East Dewey Suet (pictured below).
During Don’s tenure as President, Carbon’s contracted with major national chains such as Denny’s Restaurant’s, Hilton Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Elias Brothers Restaurants, and Perkins Restaurants.
Golden Malted Waffles Comes to Greece
The American Waffle Company becomes the FIRST authorized distributor in Europe for the Award Winning Golden Malted Waffle & Pancake products. Head quartered in Neos Kosmos, Athens, Greece – The Moraitis’ Family, who used the products at their restaurant in the United States, returned to Greece and saw an opportunity and started selling/ distributing the World’s best tasting waffles and pancakes products (B to B) to the Greek market starting the Waffle revolution in Greece.
Since then, becoming the largest waffle distributor in Europe and growing their business into a full food-service company selling their dessert products to the HO. RE. CA Industry!
Don Carbon retirement
In June. Don Carbon decides to retire and sells the business to five of his largest distributors:
A. Scott Carbon, (Fred’s Grandson), Tim Quick,former resident of Buchanan, Richard G. Emslie Jr, David Jenkins and Steve Davenport.
New Carbon Company is formed and the assets of the FS. Carbon Company
Pop-cut plate technology
New Carbon Company develops pop-cut plate technology for its state of the art waffle bakers
Supports the Troops in Afghanistan
New Carbon Company – “Supports the Troops” by sending waffle bakers and donating mix to the men and women of the military stationed in Afghanistan.
Special Memories in Carbon’ s History
Don Carbon, then owner, was asked to go fishing with George Pillsbury, then owner of Pillsbury – Don declined, knowing Mr. Pillsbury wanted to purchase the company.
Oklahoma City Bombing – Carbon’s representative and former Buchanan Chief of Police Clyde W. Weaver, who was attending a tradeshow in Oklahoma City, agreed to stay and help serve waffle breakfast for the police and firefighters who were assisting with the wreckage.
At the national Restaurant Show in Chicago, IL former Heavyweight Champion Rocky Marciano, stops into the booth, enjoys a Carbon’s Malted Waffle and spends time with the staff.
Colonel (Harlan) Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, always visited the Carbon’s booth to enjoy a Golden Malted Waffle.
Carbon’s always received tremendous support from the citizens and the City of Buchanan and would like to thank Buchanan for the many wonderful memories.
